MSP®: Managing Successful Programmes Foundation


Program management is rising in popularity. Program management is the discipline that helps manage resources and dependencies across multiple projects whilst implementing strategic changes to the organization. This course covers the basics and main principles of the MSP® methodology for managing successful programs. MSP® is an internationally recognized methodology. The MSP® Foundation course is the entry level certification course for Best Practices training in MSP®. This course is delivered using a case study designed to further enhance and cement the candidates understanding of MSP®. Students who have attended this course are suitably prepared to successfully take the associated MSP® Foundation certification test which is a requirement for attending any of the further learning courses (MSP® Practitioner and MSP® Advanced Practitioner level training) available in this track.


The MSP practitioner qualification is appropriate for a variety of roles, including Project managers, Business Change Managers, experts and advisers working within a programme office and other specialist/governance roles involved in supporting MSP programmes together with those wishing to pursue Advanced Practitioner level qualifications, such as programme managers and Senior Responsible Owners.


A PRINCE2 Foundation certificate is recommended.


This program will be conducted with interactive lectures, PowerPoint presentation, discussions, and practical exercise.


At the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Understand and apply the main principles of MSP®

• Learn how to manage programs according to the MSP® methodology.

• Distinguish the different MSP® flows.

• Realize strategic changes in organizations.

• Be up to date with state-of-the-art developments in program.

• Prepare to take the MSP® Foundation and Practitioner Certification exam

This training encompasses two certification levels:

• The MSP® Foundation course is the entry level certification course. Candidates acquire knowledge to act as an informed member of a programme office, business change team or project delivery team. The Foundation certificate is prerequisite for taking the Practitioner test.

• The MSP® Practitioner course prepares candidates to apply MSP to their own work and manage, lead, support or advise in an MSP environment in a relatively uncomplicated programme. The Practitioner certificate is prerequisite for taking the Advanced Practitioner test.

Embedding the Programme principles in an organization and organizing the Programme Office

Module 5: Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

Understanding the key principles for effective leadership of a programme and how to influence and persuade stakeholders to commit to the beneficial future.

Module 6: Benefits Management

Understanding how benefits management is at the very heart of programme management: programmes are primarily driven by the need to deliver value and benefits.

Module 7: Blueprint Design & Delivery

The programme’s vision statement provides early and valuable information as a description of the desired outcomes in customer-focused terms. As it is a description at a summary level, it needs to be expanded and developed into a blueprint. It is the blueprint that provides a usable basis for modelling benefits and designing the projects dossier.

Module 8: The Business Case

In MSP the business case provides the vital test of the viability of the programme. It answers the question ‘Is the investment in this programme still worth it?’

Module 9: Planning & Control

An overview of how the planning and control governance theme fits into MSP. Planning and control are key to the success of any transformation programme and should be seen as distinctly separate concepts and activities.

Module 10: Risk & Issue Management

Successful programme management has at its core the need to both manage and tolerate uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Risk and issue management are the vehicles for achieving this

Module 11: Quality and Assurance Management

The purpose of quality and assurance management is to ensure that all management aspects of the programme are working appropriately and that it stays on target to achieve its objectives.
