Well, bear in mind, I am not going to say anything good or bad about BYOD, after all, that is not the topic for today. The topic for today, however, have something to do with BYOD.

See, BYOD means that employees and bosses bring their device to use for work-related stuff. Which, one way or another, is good! Imagine you can have everything with you, every time, whenever you need it. But some risks come with this culture which we cannot ignore, that is Cybersecurity.

CEO might be the risk

switch of view, many reports and article out there are all highlighting the importance of getting employee aware of cybersecurity, but there are seldom any reports and articles highlighting the same importance of getting bosses and C-level people aware on cybersecurity.

Well, with such lack of focus, it is not surprising that CEO has officially joined the “risk group”, where they have become one of the people who will compromise the cybersecurity of their own company.

“CEOs and other senior board-level executives are exposing their organizations to cyberattacks and hackers because of a lack of awareness around cybersecurity, a new study has warned.”Danny Palmer, ZDNet

Despite all the effort security team puts in to protect their CEO from cyber-attack and data breaches, the fact that if CEOs did not put in the effort to protect themselves, it’s pointless. Being a CEO and senior management, it is crucial to always remember that every action they are taking, might have an unimaginable effect on their company.

They, as the person in charge, will surely have access to everything in their company, which is also the reason why they are a hot cake for hackers. There even have cases where the decision made by CEOs or high-rank management put the company’s cybersecurity at risk.

What can we do?

Well, we should consider the most personal device of the CEOs and senior management, smartphone. And it all makes sense considering that most deals are done, some way or another, thanks to a smartphone. However, with the focus on the latest flashy features and stuff, the security of the phone is often not the priority for the phone maker. Fortunately, there are still phones that invest heavily in their security. Phones brands like Apple, Samsung, Google Pixel and Blackberry are some of the makers who take security as one of their priority.

But that is not enough

Regardless of how secure a phone or device the CEOs and senior management use, if they do not pay attention to their action or decision, hackers still have ways to crack the security through them. Therefore, the number 1 priority is to get the management and CEOs to be aware of cybersecurity and how it will affect their business. Phishing, social engineering is something that well-secured device can’t protect from.

For that, CEOs and senior management should take their time to attend a cybersecurity awareness course, for the sake of their own business.

Current economy status has brought up a lot of culture in the corporate world, one of which will be the promote of BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device culture.
