IIoT is a major component in Industry 4.0 for cyber physical manufacturing to operate with ease.

To migrate to Industry 4.0, enterprises are likely considering IIOT as a part of their strategy. This is also in line with digital transformation strategies to assist with real-time and smarter decision-making. By analyzing data coming from different sensors, processes can be hastened and new revenue streams can be opened. This is also affords better control over supply chain to permit better coordination.

Here comes the big question for most organizations considering IIoT: To build IIoT platform from scratch or buying it from a provider who can build it for them?

Building a IIoT platform can be time-consuming and intimidating if one lacks the expertise. Before even building the platform, one needs to master the mechanism and techniques to get started. Facing failures multiple times is also highly possible if the IIoT development team lacked experience. However, building IIoT allows one to customize the platform freely and one can actually gained good management skills as the team is also responsible to build it.

In contrast, buying a IIoT platform allows one to save time because it is fully developed by the vendor. This also enables faster deployment once purchased. In addition, the tasks of design, development, and test is managed by vendor. Hence, the organization can invest less manpower into IIoT development. Implementation cycle is also drastically shortened. However, it has its own drawback too when purchased IIoT platform may be bundled with features that are not beneficial to the organization. The organization may end up paying more for things they don’t need.

Knowing which option suits you and your business needs help with long term planning.
